Eva Stefani, Athene, 1995, United Kingdom, 37 min.

A documentary shot in the central Larisa railway station, over four weeks, during the summer of 1995. The subject of the film is the people that hang around in the station at night: soldiers, homeless, poets, sport-fans and migrants that have just arrived in the country. Adopting the timeline of a night, the film records the atmosphere and the relations that are created from the coexistence of such diverse worlds.

Sammy Baloji and Filip De Boeck, The Tower, a concrete utopia, Belgium, 2015, 70 min.

https://vimeo.com/258620047

This video offers a guided tour by ‘Docteur’, the owner and creator of a remarkable building in the municipality of Limete, in Kinshasa (the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo). Conceived and realized by ‘Docteur’ without the help of any professional architects, the construction of this as yet unfinished tower was started in 2003.

The Doctor’s guided tour through this enigmatic and planned building offers a reflection on the legacy of colonial modernist architecture in Kinshasa, the social after lives of colonialist infrastructure, and different historical and contemporary utopian visions of the city. In this way Baloji and De Boeck do not only comment upon the degradation of colonial infrastructure but also explore the ways in which the city continues to reformulate these earlier propositions and to read new openings, possibilities and alternative utopian visions into the very ruination of the urban material fabric.
